Nikolai Astrup - Dreamlike pictures
13 August 2010 - 14 November 2010

Nikolai Astrup (1880–1928) is one of the most important painters in Norwegian art history. In his poetic pictures we find one of symbolism’s most personal forms of expression for love and the home. While the great painters of his age, such as Edvard Munch and the Danish painter J.F. Willumsen thought in terms of the international public of the big city, Astrup returned to his roots in the home region of Jølster, north of Bergen. Here the artist found inspiration for his dreamlike pictures of the landscape, the home and the family, creating one of the most powerful expressions of the Norwegian national soul.
